What is Venous Ulcers?

Venous ulcers—also called venous stasis ulcers or varicose ulcers—are open wounds that most often appear on the lower legs, especially around the ankles. They represent the most advanced stage of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition in which leg veins struggle to return blood back to the heart. This poor circulation increases pressure inside the veins, causing fluid to leak into surrounding tissues, eventually breaking down the skin and forming ulcers.

These ulcers can be painful, slow to heal, and prone to infection due to inadequate blood flow. They may develop after a minor injury or even without an obvious cause. Common signs include leg swelling, itching, skin discoloration, and thickened skin around the wound.

Causes of Venous Ulcer

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI): Weak or damaged vein valves cause blood to pool in the lower legs (venous hypertension), damaging skin and tissue.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Previous blood clots can permanently damage valves, worsening circulation and increasing ulcer risk.

Varicose Veins: Enlarged, twisted veins raise pressure in the legs, leading to tissue damage over time.

Prolonged Standing or Immobility: Limited movement reduces blood flow and promotes pooling.

Pregnancy: Temporary vein pressure increases, especially during multiple pregnancies.

Obesity: Extra weight adds strain to leg veins and worsens venous insufficiency.

Advancing Age: Natural loss of vein elasticity and valve function increases risk.

Past Leg Injuries or Surgeries: Trauma or surgical damage can impair circulation.

Venous ulcers develop when poor circulation in the leg veins leads to skin breakdown. Several factors can contribute to this process:

When these factors combine with poor vein function, the risk of venous ulcers rises significantly—making early diagnosis and treatment essential.

Stages of Venous Ulcers

Venous ulcers develop gradually, and each stage shows clear signs that the condition is worsening. Recognizing these stages early can help you get timely treatment and avoid serious complications.

Pre-Ulcer Stage (Skin Changes)

Symptoms: Skin around the ankles or lower legs begins to change color—often turning brownish, reddish, or purplish.

Signs: Skin may become thick, hardened (lipodermatosclerosis), itchy, or dry. Swelling is common, especially after long periods of sitting or standing.

Symptoms: A small, shallow sore appears, usually on discolored skin.

Signs: The ulcer may not be painful at first but can become uncomfortable as it grows. Edges are irregular, and the surrounding skin may look inflamed.

Symptoms: Ulcer increases in size and depth; pain becomes more noticeable, especially if infection sets in.

Signs: Persistent open wound with little healing progress. Discharge may be present, and the surrounding skin is often red, swollen, and warm.

Symptoms: Ulcer persists for weeks or months without proper healing. Pain is significant, and infection risk is high.

Signs: Large, deep ulcer with thickened edges, extensive skin damage, and possibly foul-smelling discharge. Prone to recurrent infections and long-term complications.

Early detection and treatment at the pre-ulcer or early ulcer stage can prevent long-lasting wounds and improve healing outcomes.

Symptoms of Venous Ulcers

Open Wound or Sore
Usually shallow with irregular edges. Commonly located on the inner side of the leg near the ankle. May appear moist or weeping, with yellow or green discharge.

Swelling (Edema)
Persistent swelling in the lower leg or ankle due to fluid buildup. Often worsens after standing or sitting for long periods.

Pain or Discomfort
Can range from mild aching to severe pain. Pain is typically worse when the leg is lowered and improves with elevation.

Skin Changes Around the Ulcer
Hardened skin (lipodermatosclerosis). Brownish or reddish discoloration from hemosiderin staining. Itching, flaking, or eczema-like symptoms may occur.

Varicose Veins Nearby
Visible, twisted veins are often present close to the ulcer site.

Signs of Infection
Foul-smelling wound or presence of pus. Redness, warmth, and sometimes fever.

Delayed Healing
Ulcer may persist for weeks or months without proper treatment.

Skin Sensitivity or Burning
Surrounding skin can be tender, irritated, or sensitive to touch.

Venous ulcers have a distinct set of symptoms that help differentiate them from other types of wounds. Recognizing these signs early is key to getting the right treatment and avoiding complications.

If you notice these symptoms, especially an open sore with swelling and skin changes, consult a vein specialist immediately to prevent worsening or infection.

How to Get Rid of Venous Ulcers – The Right Way

Varicose veins aren’t just a cosmetic concern — they’re a medical problem. Faulty vein valves cause blood to pool, leading to swelling, pain, and, if untreated, ulcers.

Don’t Fall For Myths

Herbal creams, miracle oils, leech therapy, turmeric pastes, or unregulated medicines cannot repair damaged veins. These “quick fixes” waste time, give false hope, and may let your condition progress to ulcers, blood clots, or chronic pain.

The Proven Approach

The only reliable way to treat venous ulcers is through a duplex ultrasound and evaluation by a qualified vein specialist. Modern, FDA-approved treatments can:

  • Find and treat the root cause
  • Provide long-term relief
  • Prevent serious complications

Bottom line: Don’t risk your health on unproven remedies. Choose expert care for safe, lasting results.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT)

EVLA is a gold-standard, minimally invasive laser treatment for varicose veins and related venous ulcers. Guided by ultrasound, a thin laser fiber is inserted into the diseased vein, delivering precise heat that seals it shut permanently. It’s quick and patients get discharged in the same day of the procedure.

Why patients choose EVLA:

  • Day-care procedure – walk in, walk out the same day
  • No major cuts or stitches
  • Quick recovery with minimal discomfort
  • Proven long-term results for straight, large veins

VenaSeal™ Closure System

VenaSeal is the most advanced, next-generation treatment—especially beneficial for elderly, diabetic patients, or those with active venous ulcers. Instead of heat, it uses a safe medical adhesive to close the vein, removing the need for anesthesia, tumescent injections, or even stockings in most cases.

Why patients choose VenaSeal:

  • Virtually painless with no heat or burns
  • Ideal for elderly and diabetic patients
  • Immediate return to normal activities
  • Excellent results for varicose veins & venous ulcers
